Alfa Romeo has staged a race to decide once and for all whether it’s quicker to cross London on foot or by car.

As the Official Car Supplier to UK Athletics (UKA), Alfa drafted in former European and Commonwealth 400m Champion, Iwan Thomas to run against one of their very own MiTo superminis in a 3.8-mile race around central London’s bustling city streets, starting and finishing at Tower Bridge.

European and Commonwealth 110m hurdles Champion Andy Turner got in the driving seat, aided by the ‘pinpoint’ navigation skills of UK Long Jump record holder Chris Tomlinson.

With a congestion charge beating 1.3 JTDM-2 85 bhp engine now added to the range, the MiTo ensured that the pair – two of Britain’s brightest World Championship medal contenders – wouldn’t be held up having to pay the toll for driving in central London.

It was a close-run affair, but the MiTo took the victory, completing the race in 20 minutes flat, with Iwan Thomas finishing just 1 minute and 44 seconds behind. To watch highlights of the contest, visit
