A rejuvenated Richard Kilty is aiming to do himself justice at this weekend’s European Athletics Team Championships – after admitting he came close to calling it quits during a bleak winter.

The Stockton sprinter has been in blistering form of late, earning the Gateshead Harrier a European call-up at his home track.

Richard, 23, has been named as a replacement for James Dasaolu in the marquee men’s 100m race and will also run in the 4 x 100m relay at the International Stadium.

It’s all a far cry from the New Year, when the Teessider considered quitting athletics for good following a raft of problems.

But Richard dug deep to regain full fitness and, after recent victories in Greece, Slovenia and Switzerland, he finds himself in a good place again in time for Gateshead.

Great Britain and Northern Ireland will take on major powers including Russia, France and Germany for the European team title.

Richard said: “I’m really looking forward to it. It’s pretty much my senior international debut, and to be making it on my home track, I couldn’t ask for any more.

“I was really at rock bottom before and seriously thought about walking away.

“But all of those cold, dark nights training at Clairville with my dad have paid off.

“I’ve been to seven different countries in five weeks, but have still put in some good performances despite being tired from all of the travelling.

“I’ve been back in the country for a couple of weeks now, so I’m refreshed and hoping to do myself and GB proud.”
