Former Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies was guest of honour at the City College graduation ceremony.

There were 80 graduates who donned gowns and mortar boards and gathered at Coventry Cathedral to collect their certificates.

More than 100 others have successfully completed courses at the college in Swanswell Street, Coventry city centre, but couldn’t come to the ceremony.

Sharron said: “I always like giving things away and handing out the certificates is nice because it’s the culmination of such a lot of hard work.”

Being guest of honour at the ceremony wasn’t her first visit to Coventry. She first came to the city aged just nine for her first national swimming championships where she won a bronze medal.

She said: “I was so proud to win it I put it under my pillow and slept with it there.”

She gave a motivational speech to the graduates and their families before presenting the certificates.

Earlier on in the day the top achieving students in each subject were honoured at the college annual awards, also in the cathedral.
