NATHAN Douglas said he was “absolutely buzzing” after earning his first Great Britain & Northern Ireland selection in three years.

Nathan will compete in the European Team Championships at Gateshead next weekend.

The 30-year-old said: “I am absolutely buzzing. I can’t wait to get out there and jump.

“I was really happy to be be selected. I knew that I was in with a shout, but it is great to make it.”

Nathan returned to action last month after missing a year with a hamstring injury, having sat out 2011 with ruputured ankle ligaments.

“It has been such a long time since I have been in a GB team, it was the European Championships in 2010,” said Douglas.

“Three years later, to get back in a GB vest, after everything that’s happened, is great.

“It’s something I have been fighting for since then.”

Before Gateshead, Douglas will compete at the Folksam Challenge Uppsala meeting in Sweden on Sunday.

“I am still on my way back and hoping to progress,” said Douglas.

“It is nice that at the start of that progression I have been picked for the European Team Championships.”

He added: “When you are coming back from injury, it takes a long time to find your rhythm and confidence.

“The event is really kamikaze. People don’t realise how much it takes to really let go on the runway.”

Douglas’s best jump of his comeback has been 16.54m, while he needs to leap 17.20 to gain the A-standard for August’s World Championships in Moscow.

He said: “It is a very hard qualifying mark when you consider only the top four beat that at London 2012, but my aim is to get it.”

Douglas believes his best years can still be ahead of him.

“People are peaking later and later,” he said.

“Phillips Idowu is 34 and still going, while Jonathan Edwards didn’t have his big breakthrough until 29.

“The top British woman, Yamilé Aldama, is 40.

“I could have two more Olympic cycles to go.”
