Great Swim, Europe’s biggest open water swimming series, has announced Commonwealth, European & World Champion and TV Presenter Iwan Thomas will be their official 2013 ambassador.

Iwan, who has undertaken a number of gruelling sporting challenges including the Bupa Great North Run and last month’s Virgin London Marathon, will be swapping his trainers for a wetsuit this summer as he gears up to swim in some of the UKs most picturesque locations.

Iwan said, “I’m really looking forward to getting involved in the Great Swim series this year, I have taken part in triathlons before, so I’m no stranger to a wetsuit, but it will be amazing to swim in iconic locations like Windermere and Loch Lomond.”

“Having watched the TV coverage in previous years I know there are a huge range of people who take part in these events for many different reasons – I will be continuing to support the work of my chosen charity Macmillan, but I’m pretty competitive so I’ll be looking for a good time too!”

The Great Swim series will see over 20,000 swimmers compete in five events held in lakes, lochs and urban docks in England and Scotland. Kicking off with a three day festival of swimming in the Lake District National park in Cumbria from the 14-16 June at Windermere, where up to 10,000 participants are expected.

Other events in the series include; the Great East Swim at Alton Water near Ipswich on the 22 June, the Great Manchester Swim at Salford Docks on the 20 July, The Great Scottish Swim at Loch Lomond on the 24th August and the Great London Swim, at the Royal Victoria Docks on the 31st August.

Suitable for swimmers of all abilities, from first timers to Olympic Champions, places are still available in all Great Swim events.
