Ashia Hansen MBE

Ashia Hansen MBE

As a former World Indoor Champion and World record holder, Ashia became one of the world’s greatest Triple Jumpers, setting twenty British records.

In 1997 Ashia won her first major medal, Silver at the World Indoor Championships in Paris and her career took off from there.

In a career that lasted over a decade, Ashia accumulated a number of honours, becoming the World Indoor Champion, European Indoor Champion, Commonwealth Games Champion and European Champion. Not only that, she broke the world indoor record with a jump of 15.16m.

She would always excite the crowd with a number of nail-biting finishes, most notably at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Leading the competition until the final round, Françoise Mbango from Cameroon took the lead with a jump of 14.82m.  With her final jump to go, Ashia responded like a true champion, with a season’s best jump of 14.86m to retain her Commonwealth title

Ashia was awarded an MBE in 2003 for her outstanding contribution to sport.

Constantly in demand off the track, Ashia previously took part in the 1999/2000 BBC Sports Advertising Campaign (aired BBC1 & BBC2). Publication appearances include Health & Fitness, Hotline and BA Business Life magazine just to name a few. With a number of Television appearances on the likes of Question of Sport, Ashia is an established figure in today’s media.

She is still a regular feature at the Alexandra Stadium but now in a coaching role. She is looking forward to passing on her knowledge and experience to the next generation of Britain’s jumpers.

In September 2017, Ashia teamed up with Kelly Sotherton to appear on Pointless Celebrities.

Ashia is a proud Mum of two young children.
