Statement Issued on behalf of Christine Ohuruogu
4th April 2007
“I am totally stunned by CAS’s decision and the length of time it has taken them to reach their conclusion that my original ban of a year should remain in place.
To be prevented from competing in the sport I love because of a lack of understanding of the system is very hard to come to terms with, especially as athletes from other sports in the same position as me have received much shorter bans. (3 months).
The comment from CAS that “There is no suggestion that she is guilty of taking drugs in order to enhance her performance or otherwise and, indeed, this case can be viewed in all the circumstances as a busy young athlete being forgetful“ does nothing to make this situation easier to bear.
Today’s ruling has robbed me of my chance to represent Great Britain in any future Olympic Games and I find myself unable to come to terms with this.
My case has highlighted some problems with the current system and a general lack of understanding among elite sportspeople and some administrators. I pray that other honest Athletes do not find themselves in this devastating position.”
