Laura joined her local athletic club after competing for her secondary school at the Borough Championships, where she came second and really enjoyed it.

Starting out as a sprint hurdler Laura won the Junior Inter-area race in 2001 with a PB of 14.35w. In 2002, she decided to move away from hurdles concentrating on 100m and 200m as her flat speed was vastly improving.

In 2003, Laura competed for Britain at the Under 23’s International where she ran a best of 11.76. In 2004, she made great improvements reducing her 100m time to 11.57w and 11.5w, achieving a new personal best. Additionally, Laura won the Under23 AAA’s title in the 200m

In 2005, Laura continued making improvements, reducing her indoor 60m PB to 7.44 where she came 4th at the AAA Championships. Laura’s outdoor season also started well, winning the 100m at the British Universities, in 11.67 and taking the CAU Inter-Counties title in 11.52, setting a new PB. Laura’s brilliant performance over the 100m continued. She won her race in Bratislava in June, achieving a new PB of 11.47 and then 11.46w, when she took Gold at the Bedford International Games. Laura then went on to gain the senior AAA title in Manchester. Laura’s continuous, superb performance saw her though to the final at the World University Championships.

Laura’s success followed into 2006, taking her indoor 60m PB down to 7.30 in January. At the Commonwealth Games, Laura showed great potential at an International level, running a new PB in every round of the 100m. Her new PB of 11.38 saw her through to the 100m final where she ran 11.46, finishing in 4th place. Additionally, Laura’s superb third leg of the 4 x 100m relay helped secure the team with a Silver medal. Laura then gained the100m title at the Welsh Championships in Cardiff, running 11.42 and ran 11.5 at the European Cup in Malaga before gaining another Silver medal as a member of the 4 x 100m relay team.

The 2007 indoors season then started well for Laura in the 2007 UK Championships in Sheffield where she edged out Jeanette Kwakye in the final of the 60 metres by one hundredth of a second, smashing her lifetime best with a 7.25 performance.

Following this Laura made her ambitions clear from the outset of the 2007 outdoor season, choosing to double up in the 100m and 200m at the Bedford International. Here she demonstrated the clear benefits of a hard winter’s training, taking pole position in both events.

Following this success Laura decided to focus on the 100m for the rest of the season and next travelled to Hungary where she continued her winning streak with a time of 11.24s.

At the World trials and UK championship Laura was awarded the same time as the winner Jeanette Kwakye, but in this instance the officials fell in favour of Kwakye. Despite this Laura did not lose focus as she continued with her seasons plans, simply demonstrating her dominance over 100m running a PB of 11.19s at Loughborough.

Laura’s season moved from strength to strength as her consistent performances led to her selection for the World Championships in Osaka. She was the only Briton to make it through to the semi-finals of the 100m where she ran 11.32s and followed this up playing a pivotal role in the 4x100 relay team, eventually finishing 4th in the Final in the third fastest time by a British team. This was a great end to a year in which she was established as Britain’s fastest female.

2008 started strongly for Laura as she powered through the Indoor Trials in Sheffield her heat, semi and the Final, claiming the title of British Indoor Champion for the second year in a row. This also saw her cement her position in the GB team for the World Indoor Championships in Valencia where she eventually made it through to the semi finals, gaining further Championship experience in the build up to this summer’s Olympic Games in Beijing.

Laura is coached by Madeline Cobb who has helped her recognise her true potential, motivating her to concentrate on her sport, devoting 6 days a week to her training.
