Anyika Onuora
is one of the most promising British female sprinting talents.
Anyika won English Schools 100m titles in 2001 (intermediates)
and 2002 (senior). In the former year she ran a pb of 11.86 for 2nd on her junior international debut
against
In 2003 she won the AAA U20 200m
indoors and out and was 2nd in the indoor 60m and outdoor 100m. That year she
was 3rd in the
She was 3rd in the AAA U23 100m in
2004 and 2005 and 2nd at 200m in 2005 and particularly excelled at the longer
distance, winning the Northern title and coming 4th in the AAAs.
She improved her bests in late season races at 100m to 11.44 and 11.42w and at
200m to 23.56 and was close to that 100m best when running 11.46 for 4th in her
semi-final at the 2006 Commonwealth Games before running the anchor leg on the
silver medal-winning 4x100m England team. She improved her pbs to 11.38 and 23.35 at Oordegem
before earning European Championships selection with 2nd in the Norwich Union Trials/AAA
100m in 11.39 (after a pb 11.31 in her semi-final).
She was a semi-finalist in the European 100m (11.45 after 11.38 in her heat)
before running the first leg on the British 4x100m team that took a surprise
silver medal.
She ran a season's best of 7.34 for 60m indoors and 100m in
11.48 and 200m in 23.38 outdoors in 2007 and in 2008 was 2nd in the UK Indoor
60m in 7.33.
Anyika is now working hard in training for the Beijing Olympic
